born to William Lister Bramwell and Ann Brown between 1874 and 1901. She was baptised on the 9 February 1885 in Gateshead. George Thirlwell Hoye was born 1st June 1882 in Newcastle England, the son of John Hoye and Elizabeth Thirlwell.
Notably, Dorothy and her children, Robert, Albert, William and Lily, do not appear in the 1911 Census. In contrast, George Hoye is listed in that census residing at 12 Russell Street, Middlesbrough. In the 1921 Census, George is living at 18 Romulus Street in Gateshead with his three sons, but no sign of Dorothy or Lily. Further records show George living alone at 18 Romulus Street, Gateshead, in the 1939 Register, but again, no mention of Dorothy. Although Dorothy is not listed on the 1911 or 1921 Census, I have found an electoral roll from 1920 showing Dorothy and George with a shop at 3 High Street Gateshead while their abode is shown as 18 Romulus Street. Additional evidence raises further questions. An entry in the UK and Ireland Incoming Passenger Lists (1878_1960) records Robert Hoye arriving in the UK from New York on 11 December 1928. His proposed address was 18 Romulus Street, Gateshead, the same address where his father George is recorded in the 1939 Register. Curiously, there are no outbound passenger records for Robert, Albert, or William, and only Robert appears on an inbound record. This absence of documentation adds further uncertainty to the timeline of events. Although all three sons, Robert, Albert, and William later married, there is no further trace of Dorothy or Lily in UK Census records. George Thirlwell Hoye died on 4 January 1945 at Bensham Hospital, Gateshead, from an intestinal obstruction at the age of 62.
UPDATEI have recently received an email from someone in Sydney, Australia, which sheds some light on why Dorothy and Lily have been hard to locate. The email was from a lady called Deborah, and she is the great-granddaughter of Dorothy Lister Bramwell. According to Deborah, Dorothy travelled to Australia with her daughter Lily and a man named Herbert Wright. It is believed that Dorothy & Herbert lived near Elizabeth Bay, where they ran a business together. After searching Australian records, I found electoral rolls from the 1930's, for a Dorothy Lister Wright living with a Herbert Wright at 164 New South Head Road in Double Bay, a suburb of Sydney. This would suggest that Dorothy and Herbert had married, but can find no confirmation of this. Interestingly, I was able to find a 1929 Marriage Certificate for Lily Thirlwell Hoye who married an Alexander John Graham in Rockdale New South Wales. Further record searches showed a death entry for Dorothy in 1946 and for Lily in 1994, both in Australia. With this new information, it would appear that Dorothy and George had separated, possibly around the time of the 1911 Census, and Dorothy had left the marital home to start a new life. Interesting that she only has Lily with her and not her three sons.
