Mary Ann Thackray was born abt 1853 in Walker, Northumberland England.

John was working as a coalminer when he married, a job he continued throughout his life, until his death in 1906.

John and Mary Ann married in 1873 in England.

During their time together they had 7 children,

In 1894, Mary Ann passed away at the young age of 41, the following year John went on to marry a lady by the name of Ann McWaters in Newcastle.

The death of Mary Ann at such a young age, left John with 7 children to look after including his youngest, Anthony Thackray,
who was only 2 when his mother died, a fate that had stricken John himself when his own mum died from Cholera in 1853 when John himself was only 2.

John & his second wife Ann, were living at 53 Arthur Street Hebburn with John working at Hebburn Colliery as a Hewer when
he was killed in an accident at Hebburn Colliery on the 13th December 1906 while working at the coalface.
Durham Mining Museum's website has a memorial page to John and a report on the cause of the accident.
John's death left his wife Ann a widow and his youngest child, Anthony, without both parents at the tender age of just 14 years old.
