In the 1939 Register, taken in September, James is living at 9 Goschen Street in Gateshead, with his younger sister Ann and her husband, Thomas P McCretton. James' marital status shows he and Annie divorced by the time the 1939 Register was taken.
The photo above shows James at the back with his sister Ann and her husband Thomas McCretton, and two of Thomas & Ann's children, Irene and Patricia.

Could the woman wearing the hat be James' ex wife Annie?
Could this photo have been taken in the back yard of Goschen Street?

James and Annie only had one child, Vera L born in 1925 in Tynemouth England.
Sadly, in 1929, it appears Vera died at the very young age of 4 years old.
